The New Hotel, Athens: Contemporary Art Meets Ancient City

View of Mt LYc from New Hotel

What happens when you combine contemporary art with an ancient city?

The New Hotel, Athens

I happened to find the answer to the question above in the form of The New Hotel, Athens. When searching for a place to stay, I wanted accommodation that would be as beautiful as the surrounding ruins of the city. The New Hotel was what I found, and it did not disappoint.

The irony behind the name The New Hotel, is that many of the artistic elements have been made from OLD items. Reclaimed wood and other recycled goods form beautiful contemporary art pieces that dominate the hotels interior. Truly giving life to the expression: “One man’s junk is another man’s treasure.”

The Rooms

Spacious, carefully designed rooms house plush beds that are so comfortable I extended my stay an extra day just to lounge around! On top of that, the entire room was spotlessly clean and even included a small balcony. I emphasize the word small, but hey, at least it was there…and what better way to end a day than by sipping a glass of wine while taking in the balcony view of the Acropolis at sunset.

The Location

Before going to Athens I knew I wanted to be in a central location near Syntagma Square. Once I had that information, the next step was to find adequate accommodation. The New Hotel went above and beyond the requirements needed to satisfy that prerequisite. All, and I repeat, ALL of the major attractions of Athens are within close proximity to The New Hotel. In fact, the only time a taxi was needed during my entire stay was when I had a night out on the town over a weekend. In addition to the attractions of the city—shopping, as well as good, cheap food can also be found nearby.

The Final Verdict

If I returned to the city, would I stay at this hotel again?

When you answer “Yes!” to that question without hesitation, then you know the hotel has done a job well done. Attentive staff, beautifully-designed artistic interior, and a prime location in the heart of the city are all elements that enhance a lodging experience. New Hotel included all that and more. As member of the YES! Hotels group, when considering the question above…New Hotel gets an emphatic YES from me as well!

Key Information

Rooms: 79 rooms ranging from $163 USD/night, and you can book in advance here for the best possible deal.

Facilities: Great breakfast buffet offered at the New Taste Restaurant, and there’s also a rooftop lounge with panoramic views of the city. Additionally, the hotel also has an in-house spa and gym—for combining wellness and fitness to your retreat.

Traveling to the airport: I made the mistake of arranging a taxi upon arrival, but that is completely unnecessary.  From the airport, for less than $10, you can take the metro directly to Syntagma Metro Station and it’s less than a 5-minute walk from there.

When to go: Anytime of the year is great to visit. However, I personally do not like to deal with throngs of tourists at every turn. One of the greatest amenities that a hotel can have is location, and this one certainly has that. Throw in a look of style (I love the “tree” support beams in the restaurant) and a bit of luxury and you have a winner.
